Lokomotiva na svoz dřeva modelové železnice v měřítku Sn3 pro železniční modeláře v modelářské kvalitě - Michigan Californian Lumber Co. #003 On30 Class A 2-Truck Wood Fired Open Cab SHAY Logging Steam Locomotive For Model Railroaders Inspiration - the wood burner most often had a fence made of steel straps surrounding its tender deck with the slats spaced apart.

The Bachmann Shay with the open cab modified by "Backwood Miniatures" of England - with a brass and white-metal castings detailing and conversion kit. The water tank is from the Bachmann Shay, but has the top flared edging removed, and extension to the water filler pipe and the brass retaining fence added. The finished locomotive with it is distinctive open cab, large diamond smoke stack and big headlight.

On30 gauge - we add a lower case "n", which denotes that our trains run on narrow gauge track. Finally, we add the numerical width of the gauge that our trains run on. This could be 30, which means the track gauge is 2ft 6inch or 30 inches, or 3, which means the track gauge is 3 foot or 36 inches.

The term "SCALE" denotes what proportion our model is to the real life object that the model is based on. Any object that we model, whether it be a train, structure or a piece of nature such as a tree, is built to scale. For an example, the scale that we model in is called "O" scale, which has a proportion to the real world of 1:48, or 1/4" to the foot. That means our models are 48 times smaller than the real thing. If you are modeling in "H0" scale, it is proportion to the real world is 1 to 87, or 87 times smaller than the real world.

So we model in "O" scale (1/4" to the foot), using trains that run on a track gauge of 3 feet. We thus say that we model in "On3". If we were modelling in H0 scale (1/87th) with a track gauge of 30 inches, we would say that we model in "H0n30" or "H0n2½" denoting so the fact that it is narrow gauge and what track gauge our trains run on.

This locomotive could pull a five car train up the 10 percent grade. Driving normal fixed frame locomotives on logging railways was virtually impossible. The irregular underground made the wheels come off the track and derailed the locomotive. The three most numerous solutions to this problem were the Shay (2771 built), the Climax (appr. 1100 built) and the Heisler (appr. 850 built).

The Shays landmark is its powerful fast running three cylinder steam engine on the right side. Early examples though were fitted with two cylinders and with a straight boiler.

Like so many technological advancements, invention is often derived from need. These interesting geared locomotives were conceived and designed by men working on site and looking for better ways to transport logs as quickly as possible on temporary rails over rough terrain. Ephraim Shay was one of these men and the story starts with him.
