These boxcars were originally constructed for the Lake Tahoe Railway & Transportation Company, arriving on the Slim Princess in 1926-1927. They bore prior the numbers 336-338 prior to the “great re-numbering” which took place 1946-1947...

The Number 17, a 20 ton (40k lb. capacity) car sits atop a "Modified Arch Bar" type of truck... much heavier-duty looking than the "Thielsen" type Arch Bar Trucks for which the S.P was famous... now at the Laws Railroad Museum in Laws, California, about 6 miles east of Bishop, on US Highway 395, the Owens Valley.

What sets this boxcar apart from many of the others are the huge cross members (needle beams) beneath it... Since these cars were built years after many of the others, it may have been that the builder observed the issues the lighter-duty cars exhibited, which same accounted for why they had only 20,000 pound gross carrying capacities, whereas these cars could haul 40,000 pounds...

S SCALE - originally called "H-1" because it was half the size of Gauge 1 (1:32), the "S" name is derived from "sixty-fourth". Sn3 – using S scale (1:64 ratio) with 14.3 mm (0.563 in) gauge track.

In rail transport modelling, Sn3½ is a scale/gauge combination derived from S scale to represent narrow gauge 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) track by using 16.5 mm (0.65 in) gauge track (the same as HO gauge). The scale is 1:64. As 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) track scales down to 16.5mm at 1:64, modelers use HO gauge track (which represents standard gauge at 1:87 scale) on Sn3½ layouts. This scale is popular in North America to depict 3 ft (914 mm) narrow-gauge prototypes (using dedicated 14.28 mm (0.562 in) gauge track and known as "Sn3"), and elsewhere to depict the 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) narrow-gauge railways (using H0 scale 16.5 mm / 0.65 in gauge track and known as "Sn3​1⁄2") of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Sn3½ is so popular in South Africa, Australia and the most common narrow gauge in the United States and in Ireland.

3 ft (914 mm) gauge railroads were widespread in the United States in the period 1880-90. While most of these railroads were converted to standard gauge by the start of the 20th Century, a number of lines survived till the Second World War and later, and became popular subjects for modelling. Probably the most popular prototype is the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, followed by other Colorado railroads such as the Rio Grande Southern and Colorado and Southern. Other railroads from California and the eastern states are also popular.

Southern Pacific SP (nebo Espee z iniciál SP) byla americká železniční síť I. třídy, která existovala v letech 1865 až 1996 a fungovala převážně na západě Spojených států. Systém provozovaly různé společnosti pod názvy Southern Pacific Railroad, Southern Pacific Company a Southern Pacific Transportation Company.

Původní Southern Pacific začala v roce 1865 jako pozemková holdingová společnost. Poslední inkarnace Southern Pacific, Southern Pacific Transportation Company, byla založena v roce 1969 a převzala kontrolu nad systémem Southern Pacific. Společnost Southern Pacific Transportation Company byla v roce 1996 převzata společností Union Pacific Corporation a sloučena s její železniční společností Union Pacific Railroad.

The Southern Pacific legacy založila nemocnice v San Francisku, Tucsonu a Houstonu. V 70. letech 20. století založila také telekomunikační síť s nejmodernější mikrovlnnou a optickou páteřní sítí. Tato telekomunikační síť se stala součástí společnosti Sprint, jejíž název vznikl ze zkratky Southern Pacific Railroad Internal Networking Telephony.
