The Southern Pacific Railway included rugged routes through the Sierra and Cascade mountain ranges that challenged the most powerful locomotives with 2.5% grades and many miles enclosed by tunnels or snow sheds. Although the latter kept the line clear of heavy snow, the tight spaces deflected the noxious stack exhaust down along the boiler into the cab, nearly asphyxiating train crews. In 1908, enterprising Southern Pacific designers solved the problem by simply turning the locomotive around so that the stack and its choking fumes were behind the cab.

Preceded by several classes of smaller cab forward locomotives, the modern articulated consolidation or AC class debuted in 1928. Culminating in the AC-12 class of 1944, eventually 195 of the giant 4-8-8-2 s ran on the Southern Pacific. With 124,300 pounds of tractive effort and a top speed of 75 miles per hour, the AC-12 proved its worth hauling both freight and passenger consists. On level ground, they could single-handedly pull 100 cars. Despite such service, the diesel age loomed on the horizon in the 1950s, signaling the end of Espee steam power. The AC-12 s were retired after barely a decade of service.

Cab forward #4294 proved not only the last AC-12, but the last new steam locomotive ever purchased by the Southern Pacific. Thankfully, this famous locomotive was preserved for posterity. It remains on display at the California State Railroad Museum and is also designated a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark.

Fully featured with TMCC and the Odyssey System for speed control, this new scale-sized Lionel model marks the first time that this historic locomotive has ever been portrayed in die-cast metal O gauge. Accurate detailing includes many separately applied metal parts from sand lines to prototypical builder s plates. The unsurpassed RailSounds 5.0 sound system brings the AC-12 to life with effects that even include the unique air horn.

V roce 1901 postavila společnost North Pacific Coast Railroad lokomotivu č. 21, jednu z prvních lokomotiv s kabinou na čele (cab-ahead engine). Pro společnost SP byla hlavním důvodem pro přemístění kabiny řada sněhových přístřešků v délce 38 mil mezi Truckee a Blue Canyonem, které byly postaveny, aby trať zůstala v zimě provozuschopná, když se v pohoří Sierras tvořily závěje o výšce až 50-200 stop. V roce 1909 dodala společnost Baldwin dvě lokomotivy 2-8-8-2 typu Mallet (4000 a 4001), které nahradily lokomotivy typu Consolidation. Táhly dobře, ale posádky se dusili plyny a kvůli délce lokomotiv neviděly dopředu.

Pro vyřešení těchto problémů dodal Baldwin v roce 1909 společnosti SP 15 lokomotiv třídy MC-2 (Mallet Consolidation), kde byl tendr připojen na konci dýmnice a topný olej byl veden potrubím po celé délce lokomotivy pod tlakem 5 liber z tendru do topeniště. Do roku 1913 bylo vyrobeno 46 těchto lokomotiv, z nichž většina byla později přestavěna ze složených (compound) na jednoduché (simple). V roce 1911 bylo postaveno 12 lokomotiv Mallet Mogul (MM-2) 2-6-6-2 s kabinou vpředu pro osobní dopravu. Kvůli nadměrnému opotřebení příruby, které způsobovalo vykolejení, byly přidány do čela stroje čtyřkolové podvozky. Ve 30. letech 20. století měla společnost SP celkem 257 lokomotiv s kabinou vpřed.
